I usually get on the computer after waking up in the morning, getting home from school and at night before I go to sleep I use the computer to check emails, updated class work my teachers may have posted, or even just to do a little messing around on MySpace or freely searching the web. There is a lot of talk about how being on the computer and searching the web is a bad thing because of how excessively people use it. Personally, I don’t think the amount of time being on the computer really matters, but I think if you are not using the computer productively time is a big issue. Looking at porn for hours a day is not a good thing for someone to do; first off it gross, second there’s is not one thing productive coming from it-so basically it would be a waste of someone’s time. I’m not saying you should not be able to look at what you want on your computer but do it wisely don’t waste your own time doing something that won’t benefit you. On the other hand if I bought a computer with my money I should be able to look at whatever I want whenever I want. So when it comes to myself I know I do a pretty decent job at using the computer productively. I would have to say the computer is one of the positive pieces of technology in my life.

Even though it may seem as if I’m on the computer a lot there are many other sources of technology I use everyday besides the computer. Another piece of technology that has a big effect on my life is my cell phone. Now when it comes to my cell phone I think I will have to admit I may have a bit of a problem, because I am constantly on my phone I would have to say I probably open my phone every five to ten minutes. Most of the time it’s not to talk, it’s to text. Last month alone I had over twelve thousand text messages between incoming and outgoing! I am willing to admit that this may be a bit of a problem because most times I can’t carry a conversation with someone without checking my phone and beginning to text while I’m in a conversation. The funny thing is I hate when I’m talking to someone and they start pushing buttons on their phone while you are speaking to them, and I can’t help but do it myself. I don’t know if it’s an addiction or if is just a bad habit, but once my phone vibrates it’s all over most attention goes to my phone. Most of the time while I am in class or driving I feel tempted to check my phone or if I receive a text message to text back.  Actually, I’m guilty of doing both of these things a good few times each! Another major bad habit that comes with  texting is I notice myself spelling words wrong sometimes the way i would spell them in a text and leaving out hyphens. So when it comes to me and my cell phone I would say it definitely has a negative effect on my life.  Cell phones are one of those things that have two sides to it, because I think a cell phone and texting helps sharpen the way people communicate and even the way people learn how to read and write. I know I read a lot of text messages everyday and doing this there must be something positive coming from this because anybody reading that much must be getting better at reading and writing.

The third thing I do the most when it comes to technology is watch television. What can I say, who doesn’t like to watch TV. I usually watch a good hour to maybe two hours of TV. A day. Most of the time I’m usually watching TV. When I should be doing something else. The television is just one of those things that sucks you in. When I see something good on I’ll think to myself “ I’ll just watch a few minutes of whatever is on” yeah right, once I sit down its all over I get comfortable on the couch and I get stuck on that movie and a few minutes turns into a few hours. I think a lot of people use the TV. To pass time when there’s nothing else to do, because I know that what I do most of the time. The television can also be one of those things that can be good and bad because you have a lot of things you can learn from TV. Such as watching the news, the weather, and even educational channels like discovery channel or the history channel. So again, for television I think it’s how you use it not so much how much you use it.

The computer, cell phones, and television are only a few pieces of technology people use now days; besides these a lot of people use cameras, video games, stereos act. When it comes to me using these devices I would have to say overall they definitely have a negative effect on my life I could be using them in a much more productive way. I don’t think my problem is so much how much I’m on them I think it is what I’m doing on them, and what I could be doing that would be more effective when I’m using them. So ask yourself what kind of devices do you use and how are they affecting your everyday life?
